A young person criticizes Trade Unions in the Spanish Parliament and is turned over the floor
Wednesday 09 December 09

Last Friday (4.12.09) Spain celebrated the 31st anniversary of Spanish Constitution. There were several celebration events programmed and, amongst them, young people and famous people went to the ‘Chamber of Deputies’ (their equivalent of the Assembly or the House of Commons) to read the honored Constitution.
One of the young people, who attends school in a neighborhood in the north of Madrid, was in charge of reading article number 28. This article establishes free syndication and workers’ right to strike to defend their interests. After reading it this young man added his own protest because trade unions relinquish the exercise of this constitutional right and he regretted the fact that they go along with political powers.
The President of the Chamber turned him over the floor and thus stopped him from complaining about the current way trade unions work. Every Spanish newspaper covered what happened in the Chamber last Friday. In digital versions there were hundreds of comments underneath the item of news, all of them praising young man’s behaviour and courage. My question is this: if people praise others’ courage to say what they think, are we on the right path? Are we implementing a real democracy? Or was the young person disrespectful, abusing his opportunity?
