Ballymurphy Peace Channel Project

Contact Name: Connor
Group Name: Corpus Christi
Group Number: 1 - 8
Location: Corpus Christi Youth Centre, Ballymurphy

The Corpus group has been working on making their video to show the Springmartin group.  Some of the issues they have been working on are: drugs, alcohol, gangs and anti-social behaviour in their area.  They went out to their area to identify the hotspots and gave a brief description on what goes on in these areas.

These young people also took part in several sessions which involved them looking at the peace wall and identifying if it had any relevance to them and what they thought of them, if they wanted them to come down, if they made them feel safer and they shared personal stories of the walls.  The group also went to the Belfast Activity Centre to meet up with the Springmartin, Whitecity and Greencastle groups.  The groups took part in an activity and team-building day.  Away from the whole group the Corpus and Springmartin groups have been over to each others' centres.

What have you learnt from doing your project?
From the sessions with the young people they have said their perceptions of the people on the other side of the Peace wall have changed.  They have realised that there are people on the other side who are willing to take part in cross community work with them.
They have also learnt that living five minutes away from the Springmartin group it didn't take a lot of work for them to be brought together as the relationships built themselves.
